School Closure – Red Weather Alert

Published: 22 June 2026

St Michael’s C of E High School will be closed to all students on Wednesday 24th June and Thursday 25th June due to the current Red Weather Alert and the exceptionally high temperatures forecast.

The safety and well-being of students and staff remain our highest priority. In line with national guidance and due to the significant risks posed by extreme heat, the decision has been taken to close the school site on these days.

Red Weather Warning – Key Safety Information

A Red Heat Alert indicates that temperatures may pose a serious risk to health, particularly for young people and vulnerable individuals. Families are strongly advised to take the following precautions:
  • Stay indoors where possible, particularly between 11:00am and 3:00pm
  • Ensure children drink plenty of water regularly, even if they do not feel thirsty
  • Keep living spaces cool by closing curtains or blinds during peak sunlight hours
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing if going outdoors
  • Apply sunscreen and wear a hat if exposure to sunlight is unavoidable
  • Be aware of signs of heat-related illness (e.g. dizziness, headaches, nausea) and seek medical advice if needed

Remote Learning Arrangements

Students are expected to continue their learning from home during the closure.

Student Work

All work will be set via Google Classroom. Parents and carers are encouraged to support their child in accessing their account regularly and completing the tasks set by their teachers.
We recognise that some students may experience difficulties accessing learning at home, for example due to limited access to devices. Please do not let this cause anxiety or concern. Where this is the case, students are encouraged to:
  • Complete any existing homework, or
  • Revise topics they are currently studying
Students should also:
  • Log in to Google Classroom regularly
  • Follow the instructions provided by their teachers
  • Check for updates and additional communication throughout the day

Further Information

The school will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates regarding reopening as soon as it is safe to do so.

If your child is unable to access Google Classroom or requires support, please contact the school directly.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support in helping to keep our school community safe during this period of extreme weather.
